H.O.T. Youth Conference

Bardwell, Ky. – The Pennyrile, Marshall County and Purchase District Health Departments, Kentucky Cancer Program, Four Rivers Regional Prevention Center, Purchase AHEC, Ballard/Carlisle KY-ASAP and Marshall County KY-ASAP sponsored an area wide Help Overcome Tobacco (H.O.T.) Youth Conference on November 13 at Murray State University’s Curris Center. This conference was one of 10 regional meetings held across the state.
The day-long conference was a gathering of schools representing ten counties, with school tobacco policies and advocacy as its main goals. These activities were shared with the hope that new H.O.T. student members would encourage their peers to cease using tobacco products, by sharing some of the same awareness events at their schools. Heather E. Robertson, MPA, who works with the Center for Smoke-Free Policy at the University of Kentucky, was the keynote speaker for the day.
Other presenters for the break-out sessions included: Mrs. Jamie Smith, Rep. Will Corsey, Ms. Joan Buchar, Dr. Tina Coffelt and Mr. Jeff Gibson.
Students and staff representing Carlisle County were: Raven Kraning, Micah Ellegood, Amy Fostervold, Hailey Hobbs, Brittany Boren, Michael Dix, Katie Fostervold, Suzie Johns, Carol Massey, Erika Fisher and Katie Handley and Angel Thompson and Lisa Mantle, the advisors for the STARS Club.
“According to the Kentucky Cancer Program, Kentucky ranks number one in adult, youth and pregnant women smokers, in the United States,” explained Sonya Rambo, Ballard/Carlisle KY-ASAP Coordinator. “This is one of the reasons that the H.O.T. program was developed.”
“Help Overcome Tobacco is more than the name of a movement; it is the vision and mission of empowered Kentucky youth,” Rambo continued. “H.O.T. is the statewide youth-led and –driven, adult-supported advocacy movement geared toward shining the light of truth on Big Tobacco. Truth is HOT. Lies are NOT.”
H.O.T. was developed as the result of a series of regional youth tobacco conferences sponsored by the Department for Public Health Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program and Tobacco Environmental Strategies Prevention Enhancement Site.
